I came across this recommendation from an article on the website MindTools.com you can read the full article here.
"Sitting down to focus on one task can be difficult, especially when you're constantly interrupted.
To help increase your focus, start with a good breakfast, and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Don't multitask, close your door, and listen to music if it helps you concentrate.
Although it may sound somewhat counter-intuitive, taking short, regular breaks throughout the day can also help you focus." --MindTools.com
Their first suggestion is to set up the proper environment for the task you are going to perform. If you're at work and likely to be stressed, have calming pictures, a comfortable chair, and an organized work space. You can also listen to music or white noise to drown out distractions. Music really does help me focus and work better so it's really quite remarkable that I never listen to it.
Nutrition is the next topic. How hungry I am greatly impacts my ability to get anything done. If I'm hungry, I'm useless. Absolutely useless. All I think about is how much I want food and how I'm going to get it. I'm like one of those cartoon characters who sees everyone around him as steaks waiting to be eaten. If I'm too full, I'm even more useless. I get tired and just want to find a nice hot rock to lay down on, or lie down on depending on whether or not I wish to be grammatically correct at that particular moment (a hot rock down on which to lie?). That brings me to the next point. Don't allow grammar to sidetrack you. It's a cunning little devil, but don't give in to its wiles! Anyway, the image below pretty well captures the way food affects my productivity.
Lastly we have to talk about mindset. If you're anxious, worried, stressed, or bored you'll be on the hunt for a good distraction. Anything to take your mind off the task at hand will be welcome. "Wow there's an infomercial on. Oh my gosh, look at that vacuum pick up all those marbles! Who spills marbles and cleans them up with vacuum cleaner? They must have a very specific target market." It helps me to give myself a time limit for performing a task. It allows me to ignore other worries for that amount of time and focus on watching Seinfeld...uh...oh...I mean...being productive.
